Seek Counsel
For many years, counseling was a bit taboo. If you were seeing a counselor, you must be weird or odd. Thankfully, that is not the case today. I believe seeking counsel is a sign of strength. I remember studying Adolescent Counseling years ago at West Georgia College (now the University of West Georgia). I was first introduced to the word “helper” as a synonym of “counselor”. I do believe that we all need a helper every now and then.
I ended up getting a degree in Adolescent Counseling and that was a game changer in my student ministry. I learned to seek first to understand before trying to be understood. I learned to use all four listening devices – my two ears and two eyes! Seeking counsel can give great perspective for sure.
David has had a quick rise to fame from his shepherd boy roots. He kills Goliath and then Saul presses him into service. He plays the harp for Saul to soothe his troubled heart. He and Saul’s son Jonathan become the best of friends. As David’s popularity grows, Saul becomes super jealous and seeks to kill David. Saul sends some men to David’s house to take him out first thing the next morning, but David makes a harrowing escape through the window. I love where he goes next. Check this out…
18 So David escaped and went to Ramah to see Samuel, and he told him all that Saul had done to him. Then Samuel took David with him to live at Naioth. (1 Samuel 19:18 NLT)
The Word is silent about their conversation, but I believe it was here that David was given great counsel in dealing with Saul. I love the part when the Spirit of God comes upon Saul’s men who were sent to get David from Samuel. Even Saul was stopped in his tracks by the Spirit of God.
Seeking counsel is a sign of great strength and resolve.
Seeking counsel is a sign of insight into one’s self.
Seeking counsel can give perspective to most every situation.
Seeking counsel is a must for strong leaders.
Jesus’ sought counsel from His Father. I believe Biblical Counseling to be ordained from God. I think the Word of God can give great counsel. It’s even more powerful to seek strong Godly counseling from a godly man or woman. I am so thankful for the many people who have given me strong biblical counsel over the years of my life.
Pressing On!
