Remember Me
There are times when people remember who I am and what I do for a living. Then there are other times when they forget about me. My day job is marketing and sales for consumers who wish to buy or sell real property. I work with lots of amazing people in our real estate company and I get to meet new people every day. I also get the chance to serve people that I’ve known for years and they’ve known me. I really want people I know and have known to remember me when they or someone they know get in a position to buy or sell real estate.
Joseph finds himself in prison after the scandal that involved Potiphar’s wife falsely accusing Joseph. Nevertheless, he is faithful to honor the Lord even while in prison and it shows. He’s given responsibility by the captain of the guard to help watch after the other prisoners. He’s a model prisoner. One particular day the chief cup bearer and baker to King Pharaoh were put into the prison where Joseph was. He built a relationship with them both. Not long after they were put there, the cupbearer and baker both had dreams. Joseph knew that the Lord could give him the meaning of them. Check this out…
9 So the chief cupbearer told Joseph his dream. He said to him, ‘In my dream I saw a vine in front of me, 10 and on the vine were three branches. As soon as it budded, it blossomed, and its clusters ripened into grapes. 11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes, squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup and put the cup in his hand.’
12 ‘This is what it means,’ Joseph said to him. ‘The three branches are three days. 13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your position, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer. 14 But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.’
20 Now the third day was Pharaoh’s birthday, and he gave a feast for all his officials. He lifted up the heads of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker in the presence of his officials: 21 he restored the chief cupbearer to his position, so that he once again put the cup into Pharaoh’s hand – 22 but he impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had said to them in his interpretation.
23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him. (Genesis 30:9-15;20-23 NIV)
In all the excitement of being restored to his original position, the cupbearer forgot about the guy in prison who delivered hope through the interpretation of his dream. Joseph’s position remained the same.
I believe that everyone wants to be remembered by people they know and care about. I see people whose face I recognize and with a little help I can pull up their name and just how I know them. It’s sometimes frustrating to know I know them but can’t remember how I know them. I want to cultivate my memory of people who are a blessing to me and pouring into my family and me. I want to remember with a grateful heart people who encourage me. I know that I need the Lord’s help to cultivate a grateful heart for those whose shoulders I stand on. The people who have been in my life or connected to me for my whole life are very special and I simply can’t forget their contribution to me as a Christ follower and as a grown man. I know that one way I can honor them is to pass the gift they gave me to others.
Pressing On!
