Precious & Priceless
There are valuable possessions – then there are priceless possessions. I’ve seen some beautiful pieces of jewelry, art, and furniture that very precious and rare. It seems that everything around me has a price point value. Everything can be purchased for some amount of money. For example, the violin that was reportedly played on the Titanic as it sank, brought $1.7 Million at auction in 2013. I would call that rare, but not priceless.
The Proverb writer speaks of something that is both precious and priceless. Check this out….
10 Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, 11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. 12 ‘I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion. 13 To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. 14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power. 17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me. 18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. 19 My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. (Proverbs 8:10-14;17-19 NIV)
As I was reading this this morning, I realized that are actually a few things that are priceless in my world. I tried to name them:
– Love of God – Wisdom – Knowledge – Health – Family – Someone to love – Being Loved by someone – Safety – Insight – UnderstandingThis could end up being a long list. There are lots of things that aren’t there. Not one of those things are related to material possessions. Wealth can’t by any of those things. I want to be wealthy in eternal things rather than material things! Knowing the Lord is precious and priceless.
