Potter’s House
I remember making a clay bowl in art class – I think I was in high school when I made it. My parents probably still have it somewhere. I enjoyed working with clay. I love watching people who are skillful with it make beautiful pieces of art. It’s crazy to think that a beautiful vase was once a lump of clay. Jeremiah reveals a beautiful analogy of clay and Creator. Check this out….
1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me. 6 He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. (Jeremiah 18:1-5 NIV)
The Lord through Jeremiah was pronouncing judgment on Israel. He was showing His authority as the Creator. We are simply the work of His hands. I was reminded of a passage in Isaiah. Check this out…
8 Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand. (Isaiah 64:8 NIV)
The clay is quiet.
The clay is moldable.
The clay is shapeable.
The clay is at the mercy of the potter.
The potter can make a beautiful vase or an ashtray.
The potter is in total control of the clay.
I want my life to be clay in the hands of Creator Potter. He can mold me and shape me into whatever He wishes.
