Possessions & Wealth

I’m not really a minimalist, but I’d like to. I have acquired a few possessions that I can certainly do life without. There are some possessions that I like more than others. I live in the USA where for the most part, we are a nation of great wealth. I’ve been to places where they had little in the way of possessions, but they were rich in love and good deeds.  Some of my possessions are more valuable than others and some possessions are more permanent than others.

Jesus taught a lot about possessions. He knew that my possessions could own me instead of the other way around. God’s economic model is more about what I possession inside my heart than any material possessions that I have acquired. Check this out….

21 Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!” 24 This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God. 25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”

26 The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.

27 Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.” (Mark 10:21-27 NLT)

There are lots of places to invest money. I know people who have made lots of money investing in the stock market, bit coin and other entities. The Lord is looking for kingdom investment. Jesus reminded me that where my treasure is, that is where my heart is. It’s easier to talk about giving than it is to become a giver. It’s really tempting to hold tightly to my possessions. In God’s economic model, givers are rewarded over wealth. It’s hard to be wealthy and be a giver. I would suggest that when we measure wealth according to God’s measure, we’ll see that wealth is so much more than money or possessions.

I want to be a kingdom minded wealthy person. I want to be generous. I want to be smart with my possessions and wealth. I want to hold tightly to my faith in God, while holding loosely to my possessions and wealth.

Pressing On!
