Perfume Aroma
Not long ago I had some really bad allergy attacks and they affected my ability to smell. I noticed that my nose and my ability to taste things are connected. My favorite ENT Doctor got me cleared up and I can smell pretty well once again. This past week I had the privilege of shopping with my wife this week for her birthday gifts. I did mean to put the “s” on the word gifts. Her birthday fell on a Thursday and the day was full of many activities so she opted to celebrate her special day on Friday and Saturday! We picked out some special for her at Belks. It’s quite interesting that as you smell the different perfumes, your nose needs a break so they put out coffee beans to neutralize my nose so that they different perfumes don’t run together. Perfume is a liquid made from essential oils extracted from flowers and spices. It is made to put on your body and emits a pleasant smell as you walk by. My wife smells really good with her new perfume! Cologne and perfume typically have different fragrance varieties. Perfume is generally made with a feminine side and may include fruity or floral essential oils. Cologne is typically crafted with the masculine in mind and may include spicy or musky fragrances.
The Lord loves smells as well. He directed Moses and the people to build Him a special altar that was just for burning incense. Check this out…
25 They made the altar of incense out of acacia wood. It was square, a cubit long and a cubit wide and two cubits high – its horns of one piece with it. 26 They overlaid the top and all the sides and the horns with pure gold, and made a gold molding around it. 27 They made two gold rings below the molding – two on each of the opposite sides – to hold the poles used to carry it. 28 They made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold.
29 They also made the sacred anointing oil and the pure, fragrant incense – the work of a perfumer. (Exodus 37:25-29 NIV)
I think the Lord loves good smells. I think it’s really cool that He made flowers that all have different fragrances. This altar of incense was built only for burning sweet smelling aroma/incense before the Lord. I love the smell of my favorite food. For my wife’s birthday we went to Chipotle and the smell inside the restaurant is a by-product of the good food that is being prepared. I love the smell of a candy shop too. I think our sense of smell is connected to our past experiences. I can still remember the smell of my Mammies (aka Grandma’s) house. I can still remember how her kitchen smelled when she made certain foods I liked. I will notice smells a little more closely today since they were obviously important to the Lord. A good aroma seems to make the here and now more enjoyable and pleasant.
Pressing On!
