Perfection
That is a tough word and tough goal. The word certainly implies freedom from flaws or defects. I’ve used that word to describe when everything seems to work just right and in harmony with the world. However, as I look closer at that word, I’m not sure I’m ever really experienced it. If I look closely enough at every single person or thing that appears perfect, I will find flaws or defects. Some people really like for others to think that they are perfect, when they know that they are not. I’m pretty sure that I’ve never met a perfect person. I am certainly not perfect. Paul tells the church in Corinth that perfection is a great target to aim for. Check this out….
8 I can’t do anything to stop the truth. I can only work for the truth. 9 I’m glad when I am weak but you are strong. I pray that you will become perfect. 10 That’s why I write these things before I come to you. Then when I do come, I won’t have to be hard on you when I use my authority. The Lord gave me the authority to build you up. He didn’t give it to me to tear you down. 11 Finally, brothers and sisters, good-by. Try to be perfect. Pay attention to what I’m saying. Agree with one another. Live in peace. And the God who gives love and peace will be with you. 12 Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13 All of God’s people send their greetings. 14 May the grace shown by the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love that God has given us, and the sharing of life brought about by the Holy Spirit be with you all. (2 Corinthians 13:8-14 NIV)
I feel better aiming for perfection because if I’m constantly aiming for perfection, then I’ll get closer to it than I’ve ever been before. I must confess that I don’t always aim for perfection. Sometimes I don’t think I aim at anything at all. I heard someone say: “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time”.
At the end of a year, I begin to take a glance at what the next year might look like. I have begun to think about my aim. I have never been much of a written goal setter, but I’m really working on it. This simple challenge inspires me to work harder at my aim. Perfection itself is probably unattainable, but I’m a much improved person if I’m aiming for it than if I’m not aiming at anything!
