Past Generations

concept of uncertainty of the futureWhen I think back to my parents, grandparents, even great-grandparents, I realize that life was a bit different back then. Over the years lots of things have changed. The way we wash clothes, the way we shower and bathe. The way we work and get to work. There is much change that has happened in my life time and even more so in their lifetime. I’m thankful that the past generations of my family knew the Lord and followed Him. That was quite an example for me. I was reminded this morning that even though they followed the Lord – I can’t live out of their faith- I need faith for today.  In fact if my family were not believers at all, I would not be responsible for their faith. Check this out….

8 Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;

    may your mercy come quickly to meet us,

    for we are in desperate need.
9 Help us, God our Savior,

    for the glory of your name;

deliver us and forgive our sins

    for your name’s sake.
10 Why should the nations say,

    ‘Where is their God?’ (Psalm 79:8-10 NIV)

I think when I read this I began thinking of how the people who have gone before me lived. Lots of my family members know the Lord. Some simply chose not to follow Him. There are whole generations of families that have not one person in the family following the Lord. The sins of that generation can’t be held against their offspring today.

I’m learning that I can learn from my past, but I can’t live there – that is a very good thing. Living in the past paralyzes me for today and tomorrow.  I need to listen and learn from the past but live today and make plans for tomorrow according to the will of God.

Pressing On!
Dwayne
