One Good Thing Leads To Another
This idiom is still true today. When I do something good, it can lead to more good choices and activities. The opposite of that is true as well. When I do something bad, it can lead to more bad things. So, the goal is quite obvious – to do good and let more good things come from that first choice to do good.
This young 8-year-old king under the guidance of his mom chose to do good. At 26 years old he made another good choice and it led to something more. Check this out….
1Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. His mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah from Bozkath. 2 He did what was pleasing in the Lord’s sight and followed the example of his ancestor David. He did not turn away from doing what was right.
3 In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent Shaphan son of Azaliah and grandson of Meshullam, the court secretary, to the Temple of the Lord. He told him, 4 “Go to Hilkiah the high priest and have him count the money the gatekeepers have collected from the people at the Lord’s Temple. 5 Entrust this money to the men assigned to supervise the restoration of the Lord’s Temple. Then they can use it to pay workers to repair the Temple.
8 Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the court secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the Lord’s Temple!” Then Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan, and he read it.
11 When the king heard what was written in the Book of the Law, he tore his clothes in despair.
13 “Go to the Temple and speak to the Lord for me and for the people and for all Judah. Inquire about the words written in this scroll that has been found. For the Lord’s great anger is burning against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words in this scroll. We have not been doing everything it says we must do.” (2 Kings 22:1-5,8,11,13 NLT)
The insight of this 26-year-old king really blows me away. He first chooses to honor the Lord with his life like his ancestor King David. He then sets out to restore the Temple and then a scroll with the Law of God is found. He hears what is written and repents on behalf of his people and himself. He immediately starts making changes based on what he’s heard.
When I come before the Lord in His Word, I should have the same attitude of heart. If I read something in the Word that I’m not doing, then I need to make the necessary changes and start right away. If I realize that I’m doing something wrong, I need to stop and make changes immediately. As I journey down the road of obedience to the Lord, there are other good options that come my way based on my past obedience. There is something very powerful in God’s Economy when it comes to obedience. Obedience is a true test of my faith. If I say I believe in Him, but don’t do what He says, I’m not really trusting Him or following Him. One good choice can lead to another good choice when it comes to seeking the Lord’s heart and walking in complete obedience to Him. It’s way easier said than done, but I’m going to do my best to walk out my faith with one good choice after another.
