On Call
There are certain professions where the job includes being on-call overnight or on the weekend. There are doctors that are available for emergencies because they are on call for their particular office. Firefighters and law enforcement are often on-call as well for an emergency where they are needed. These people go home at night knowing that they could get a call and their evening plans get pushed aside for work. They also go to bed knowing that they may possibly get a call during the night for an emergency. Being “on call” means being ready when called upon to perform. There’s a verse tucked away in Revelation 16 that challenges me to be “on call” for when the Lord returns. Check this out….
15 “Look, I come like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.” (Revelation 16:15 NIV)
My mom used to remind me that I needed to live my life like the Lord was coming back at any moment. What would He find me doing? She was trying to help me live my life before God as if I were “on call” for His return. I believe that this is a wise way to live. I don’t have to live in fear of Him, instead put my faith and trust completely in Him. I can keep check on my behavior so that I honor Him with my life. I want my behavior to reflect my heart that is devoted to Him and His ways. When my heart’s affection and my minds attention is focused on Him, I’m ready for His return and I’m “on-call” until He comes!
