Object Lesson

I remember as a kid learning great truth from an object lesson that my Sunday School teacher would use.  I remember Maxine Webb teaching me with coffee cups that she brought from home. She had a cup that was dirty on the outside but clean on the inside. Then she had a cup that was clean on the outside but was dirty on the inside. Then the last cup was one that was clean both inside and out.  She was teaching the class how important it is to take care of our heart and keep it clean before God.  Over the years I’ve learned great truth from a simple object lesson. God uses an object lesson of a Real Estate transaction to equip Jeremiah with a great truth. Check this out….

 6 While Jeremiah was in prison, he said, “The Lord spoke this word to me: 7 Your cousin Hanamel, son of your uncle Shallum, will come to you soon. Hanamel will say to you, ‘Jeremiah, you are my nearest relative, so buy my field near the town of Anathoth. It is your right and your duty to buy that field.’
8 “Then it happened just as the Lord had said. My cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the guard and said to me, ‘Buy for yourself my field near Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. It is your right and duty to buy it and own it.’ So I knew this was a message from the Lord.
9 “I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, weighing out seven ounces of silver for him. 10 I signed the record and sealed it and had some people witness it. I also weighed out the silver on the scales. 11 Then I took both copies of the record of ownership—the one that was sealed that had the demands and limits of ownership, and the one that was not sealed. 12 And I gave them to Baruch son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah. My cousin Hanamel, the other witnesses who signed the record of ownership, and many Jews sitting in the courtyard of the guard saw me give the record of ownership to Baruch. (Jeremiah 32:6-12 NCV)

God uses a simple real estate transaction to teach the people of Judah that He will restore their land after the cleansing that is about to take place.  God uses simple life stories that happen to me all the time to teach me great truth. He never misses a teachable moment when something looks so bad, but He can flip it around and use it for God. He is really the Expert in those transactions. In Jeremiahs situation, God uses the impending destruction to teach one more lesson about the outcome before it all goes down.

I’m learning daily to trust the Lord with all of my heart. He can lead me through the toughest of circumstances and He can make my path clear for the decisions needed in the moment. He makes no mistakes or miscalculations.  I would be wise to lean in and listen to Him as He teaches me great truth through simple life lessons or even object lessons.
