New Contract
My work world is filled with contracts, promises, addendums to the contract, dates, deadlines and more. It also involves people from all walks of life as well. People and contracts to not always work well, but the contract is intended to be full of promises that each party keeps with the other. Most days it is smooth and simple. On other days, it’s challenging. As I was reading in the book of Hebrews this morning, I realized that pretty much all of us fall in breach of contract with the Lord. I’m using the word contract as similar with covenant. Check this out….
10 But this is the new covenant I will make
with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their minds,
and I will write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
13 When God speaks of a “new” covenant, it means he has made the first one obsolete. It is now out of date and will soon disappear. (Hebrews 8:10,13 NLT)
The law used to be written on tablets and scrolls – it is now “written” on our hearts. The law was about rule following and behavior. The new contract is about my heart which dictates my behavior. I can go to church and act like a Christ-follower, but my heart will eventually produce actions that reveal what I really believe and who I really am.
I’ve tried “behaving” my way before the Lord and I failed miserably. I now keep surrendering my heart in obedience and repentance and I’m walking closer with Him than ever before. The more I clear my heart out and make room for more of Him, the more complete my life feels. I feel less stress when I relinquish control of my heart to Him. I can become more humble and gentle instead of old and grumpy.
I love this simple song written by Jason Ingram, Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio. It is performed by David Crowder.
Here’s my heart Lord
Here’s my life Lord
Speak what is true
I am found, I am Yours
I am loved, I’m made pure
I have life, I can breathe
I am healed, I am free
‘Cause You are strong, You are sure
You are life, You endure
You are good, always true
You are light breaking through
You are more than enough
You are here, You are love
You are hope, You are grace
You’re all I have, You’re everything
Here’s my heart Lord
Here’s my life Lord
Speak what is true

Pressing On!
