Musical Message

I love music! I grew up around music. I remember watching my grandmother entertain her fellow residents in the nursing home playing guitar from her wheelchair. She had grown up playing in string bands as a youngster. Her family was the Hayes family from Boone, North Carolina. The Appalachian music roots ran deep in her family. She passed that love for music on to her family. I know things about music that I’m not sure how I know them. I can hear certain things in music and I can tell where the song is going without seeing the music.  My kids also love music and are excellent musicians.

I was reading this morning about David’s musicians that he appointed to serve in the Tabernacle and later the Temple. There were lots of musicians and one of the leaders was Asaph, the writer of some of the Psalms. I didn’t realize that Samuels grandson Heman was the other leader. Check this out…

31 These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the Lord after the ark came to rest there. 32 They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. David was a skilled musician since he was very young playing the harp and writing songs of praise to the Lord. I can totally see why music is very important to him. I believe music is an incredibly powerful way to communicate just about any message that needs to be communicated. From the jingles on commercials, to the love songs to worship music – it is telling a story that resonates deep inside us. I believe music communicates deep passions of the soul. Music is a language all it’s own and it’s universal to the world.  I enjoy playing guitar for sure, but I’ve come to realize that music is indeed a gift from God that should be given back to Him. I enjoy a fun song with the best, but music that stirs my soul to seek the heart of God is profoundly powerful.

I’m thankful to be part of a team of musicians that sing and play music each week at Southern Hills to lead the church to seek God’s heart.

Music can celebrate.

Music can mourn.

Music can move.

Music can stand still.

Music is the outlet for my soul to sing to the Lord.
