Mountains & Molehills

There’s a certain time of year that moles used to get in our yard. I remember my parents planting a “mole bean” plan in the edge of the yard that was to keep them away. I think it actually worked!

I remember a saying that I learned as a very young kid. It spoke of “making a mountain out of mole hill”.  I guess it meant that if we make a big deal out of something that someone did to us, it gets blown all out of proportion. It speaks of exaggeration and hyperbole.  This morning in Isaiah I was reminded of the One who can “make mountains into mole hills”. Check this out…

 8 This is what the Lord says:


“At the right time I will hear your prayers. On the day of salvation I will help you. I will protect you, and you will be the sign of my agreement with the people.
You will bring back the people to the land and give the land that is now ruined back to its owners.

9 You will tell the prisoners, ‘Come out of your prison.’
 You will tell those in darkness, ‘Come into the light.’
The people will eat beside the roads, and they will find food even on bare hills.

10 They will not be hungry or thirsty. Neither the hot sun nor the desert wind will hurt them.
The God who comforts them will lead them and guide them by springs of water.

11 I will make my mountains into roads, and the roads will be raised up. (Isaiah 49:8-11 NCV)

God is in the business of taking mountains that are impossible to climb and making them into a road (or mole hill) for me to walk upon. He specializes in the impossible. Sometimes when I see a mountain, I see a wall. God shows up and shows out by leveling the mountain right before my eyes. His power is amazing and powerful. My role is not to be a “mountain mover” but to keep moving when He moves the mountains before me.

The opposite side of this picture of mountains and molehills is also worth a look. I challenged our team of REALTORS at Metro West Realty one day that if we build enough molehills then we will have a mountain. It was positive mountain building – one molehill (success) at a time.  I want the Lord to make me into a mountain of strength that is based on my journey with Him. One victory at a time can do that. Conversely, I want Him to remove the obstacles (mountains) that are in the way of the destination that He has planned for me.
