Marriage
I’ve been married a lot longer that I ever was single. As married people grow old with their spouse, they gradually lay down their individual self and think in tandem as a couple. I love being married. The companionship and intimacy is God-designed to meet some of my deepest needs. God is the Creator of everything and He created marriage. In Malachi, I stumbled across some very strong words from the Lord through this prophet. Check this out….
13 This is another thing you do. You cover the Lord’s altar with your tears. You cry and moan, because he does not accept your offerings and is not pleased with what you bring. 14 You ask, “Why?” It is because the Lord sees how you treated the wife you married when you were young. You broke your promise to her, even though she was your partner and you had an agreement with her. 15 God made husbands and wives to become one body and one spirit for his purpose—so they would have children who are true to God. So be careful, and do not break your promise to the wife you married when you were young. 16 The Lord God of Israel says, “I hate divorce. And I hate people who do cruel things as easily as they put on clothes,” says the Lord All-Powerful. So be careful. And do not break your trust. (Malachi 2:13-16 NCV)I’m pretty excited to go to San Diego next month to be part of my son Jeremy’s wedding. I actually don’t like the formality of wedding events as much as the more informal wedding. I think the two people getting married often let the bigness of the event stress them out so much that they don’t even remember what happened at their wedding. To me that is a tragedy. The wedding should be an incredibly joyful time, but also have some somber moments of deep commitment and pledge to one another. I love wedding receptions where there is quite a celebratory party going on.
I believe that God loves when marriages work well. I believe that I learn some things in the heart of God as I walk through my life married to Tina. It’s not a whimsical decision in choosing a marriage partner. It should not be based totally on physical attractiveness (although that is certainly part of the attraction). There should be a kindred spirit and similar values and goals between the husband and wife. I personally believe that God wants my marriage to be built upon Him and His ways.
Tina and I want to honor God in our marriage and continue to build strong children who know and love the Lord. It’s a team effort and God is the team leader!
