Life Changes
There are people I’ve known for years. They are consistent in their life. They sit a certain place at church and on Tuesday morning they can be found in the same place they were last Tuesday – at the breakfast club. I really enjoy talking with senior citizens and I’m fast becoming one – AARP keeps sending me stuff!
Even though Saul was pursuing David and trying to kill him – he was a mentor of sorts to David. David’s best friend was Saul’s son Jonathan. They both died the same day in the same battle. When David learns of their death, he doesn’t rejoice – he mourns. Check this out…
11 Then David and all the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them. 12 They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the army of the Lord and for the nation of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. (2 Samuel 1:11-12 NIV)
David took the time to grieve the death of his friend Jonathan and his mentor Saul. He even wrote a song in their memory.
I would be wise to take the time to properly grieve for my friends who die before me. I should celebrate their lives as well as grieve their absence. I should also keep careful watch on my heart that I could continue to honor God with my life. I will one day be where they are. There were some big changes in David’s future for sure, but he took the time to properly honor the fallen.
Today will be different than yesterday even though it might be similar. There were things that happened yesterday that would change things in the future. I can’t control all that happened or will happen. I can control my response to changes in life. I can always choose to be better as opposed to bitter. I can navigate the changes of life because Creator God is the same through it all – a Constant Presence in me!
Pressing On!
