Leadership Counsel
I have had the privilege of serving in areas of leadership, both in ministry and in business. There is a common thread in each situation. People in strong positions of leadership are wise to surround themselves with wise people who will speak plainly from their perspective. This can give great insight to a leader who is facing a big decision that affects many.
I’m reading “Ronald Reagan – An American Life” as told by President Reagan. Inside this book is his diary entries as well as letters written to chiefs of state to a Mom who had lost her son in the military. He was constantly seeking the counsel of his cabinet and his closest advisors. I also read “Team of Rivals” a book about the leadership style of Abraham Lincoln. His team of advisors were his most recent rivals for the nomination of President.
King David has trusted advisors as well. He organized his military forces and his kingdom to function properly. He had come a long way since his days as a shepherd boy. I think a lot of his growth can be attributed to his walk with God as well as surrounding himself with great leaders who provided him leadership counsel. Check this out….
32 Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a wise counselor to the king, a man of great insight, and a scribe. Jehiel the Hacmonite was responsible for teaching the king’s sons. 33 Ahithophel was the royal adviser. Hushai the Arkite was the king’s friend. 34 Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king’s army. (1 Chronicles 27:32-34 NLT)
I love learning. I love to listen to people who want to help me grow and learn. I’m not a huge fan of debate, but I see it as necessary in order to hear all sides of the decision that is before us. My wife is a trusted confidant and I can bounce ideas off her and she gives me a perspective that I often miss. As my kids have grown, I will often reach out to them for insight on certain matters as well. I think it’s important for strong leaders to ask good question to gain insight into the path they are on as well as from the participants along the way that he/she is leading. Listening to others is a great way to grow in understanding and insight.
Pressing On!
