It Is Well With My Soul
I absolutely love this old hymn. In fact we sang it in church just last week. I just finished Levi Lusko’s book “Through the Eyes of a Lion: Facing Impossible Pain Finding Incredible Strength”. This book really shook my soul a bit. This is one of the strongest books I’ve ever read on death and the fear it holds over me and most people I know. Levi talked very openly and vulnerable about his struggle with the death of his 4 year old daughter. After singing that song in church and affirming that all is well with my soul, I get news on Thursday of a friend of ours had arrived in heaven after a year-long fight with cancer. She was a light for the Lord. She accepted her circumstances and actually used the finishing part of her life here on earth to encourage and inspire others to know the peace that was in her soul.
I read this passage in Revelation this morning and I really don’t know what to say about all the imagery and symbolism in this book – but I know Jesus. I don’t know about symbolic horses and seals broken, but I know Jesus. He has saved my soul and I trust that whatever happens when I arrive in heaven, will be in His control and on His schedule. I have learned to give the Apostle John a break as he tried to described things that he could hardly find words in his language at that point to describe. Check this out….
12 I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood.13 Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth like green figs falling from a tree shaken by a strong wind. 14 The sky was rolled up like a scroll, and all of the mountains and islands were moved from their places. (Revelation 6:12-14 NLT)
When I read the phrase of the sky being rolled up as a scroll, I thought of the old Hymn: It is Well with my Soul.
It is Well
The story behind this song by Horatio Spafford.
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, You have taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well;
through the storm I am held;
It is well, it is well with my soul
My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul
It is well, it is well;
through the storm I am held;
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well;
God has won, Christ prevailed;
It is well, it is well with my soul
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
Even so, it is well with my soul
(By Horatio Spafford & chorus by Todd Fields)
I’m going to hold tightly to my faith in Jesus as I walk out my days on this earth prior to my arrival in heaven.
Pressing On!
