Contend For My Faith
The word contend carries with it a sense of struggle and fight. When I think of “contending for my faith”, I see the struggle. There are those who want to destroy my faith and others who want to build me up. At the end of the day, I’m the one responsible for my faith in God and I must contend for my faith in Him. I love how Jude so eloquently puts it out there. Check this out…
3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. 20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. 22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. (Jude 1:3, 20-23 NIV)
I believe that to contend for my faith, I must make choices daily to follow Him. The little things make a difference in the big picture. There are obvious times when my faith is under direct assault and then there are other times when it’s not so obvious. As I read the Word of God and seek His heart, my strength for the struggle is built up. I can clearly see where the boundaries of right and wrong are. I want to walk in the Light of the Lord. I want to contend for my faith every day for the rest of my life. I love how poetically Jude finishes up his letter. Check this out…
24 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. (Jude 1:24-25 NIV)
I want to contend for my faith, because the Lord contends for my heart!
