Cling

This word means to hold tightly to someone or something. For example, my wife will cling to me in a scary situation.  I’m tempted to cling to my family and have them cling to me, but as they grow up and move into adulthood, they stop clinging so much. I know it’s healthy, but I still miss them a lot.

I remember first discovering Cling Wrap. This thin plastic film like material that can cover a dish and keep the food inside sealed. Some materials worked better with cling wrap than others. I did learn that it would cling to itself if not properly handled.

David used this word when he was in the wilderness in talking about his faith in God. I was encouraged and inspired by this passage from a hard place in David’s life. Check this out….

O God, you are my God;
    I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for you;
    my whole body longs for you
in this parched and weary land
    where there is no water.
I have seen you in your sanctuary
    and gazed upon your power and glory.
Your unfailing love is better than life itself;
    how I praise you!
I will praise you as long as I live,
    lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
You satisfy me more than the richest feast.
    I will praise you with songs of joy.

I lie awake thinking of you,
    meditating on you through the night.
Because you are my helper,
    I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you;
    your strong right hand holds me securely.(Psalm 63:1-8 NLT)

This passage made me take a look at the things I cling to. I realize that I cling to money. I cling to pride. I cling to having people cling to me. I cling to possessions. I cling to friendships that are sometimes unhealthy.  I cling to education and knowledge. I’m not saying that these things are bad and wrong. I do believe that if I cling to these things at the expense of my relationship to the Lord, then these are wrong. Nothing or no one should keep me from clinging to Him. When I cling securely to Him, these other options actually get the proper part if me. Who I am to others should reflect Who He is to me. I am firmly committed to being a follower of Jesus every day of my life.

Pressing On!
