Changed Man
I’ve met people before that I knew when I was younger and they are completely different than when I first knew them. I believe it is in me and everyone – the power to change. I have noticed people who were once arrogant and haughty become humble and kind. I’ve seen people who were messed up with drugs and alcohol start pursuing the Lord and leave that reckless and worthless addiction in the rear view mirror. Change is not always easy to make especially when it’s drastic, but change is really always happening. It is often slow and subtle.
Judah really seems to have changed. In the life of Joseph it is interesting that Judah becomes the spokesperson for the family. I don’t believe he was bent on killing Joseph years ago when the brothers were so frustrated with his dreams. Judah was the one who suggested that they sell him into slavery. I do think that he has changed even now.
Joseph manipulates them a bit to get his brother Benjamin to come with them to buy grain. He then puts their money back in the mouth of their sack a second time, but asked his steward to put his special silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. There is method to this madness. After the steward is sent to check the bags for the cup and it was found in Benjamin’s sack, all of the brothers went back to town to find Joseph. Judah becomes the spokes person for the group. He makes passionate plea to Joseph and explains that the health of their Dad is not very good. Check this out….
33 ‘Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers. 34 How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.’ (Genesis 44:33-34 NIV)
I’m impressed with Judah at this point. He even puts his life on the line to save Benjamin’s. He also spells out very clearly how he made a promise to his dad in order for Benjamin to be allowed to come in the first place. I do believe that inside every human being is the ability to do good things and live a life of honor. We all have choices and my choices today often determine the outcome of my tomorrows. I have a feeling that Judah really regretted being part of the scheme that sent Joseph in to slavery those many years ago. Here he is offering his life for the life of his youngest brother. I do believe that no matter what I’ve become or where I’ve been, the Lord ALWAYS invites me back and notices my heart change. He builds people out of brokenness into incredible strong and honorable people. I’m so glad He changed my heart.
