Word Power!

I’m not one to play crossword puzzles or word search much. I have played both and enjoyed them at times. My wife loves the “Words With Friends” game on her phone. Words are powerful tools whether used wisely or not. They carry meaning and weight and therefore we should use them with care and consideration.  It was James who said, “We all make many mistakes. If people never said anything wrong, they would be perfect and able to control their entire selves, too…. People can tame every kind of wild animal, bird, reptile, and fish, and they have tamed them, but no one can tame the tongue. It is wild and evil and full of deadly poison. We use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people, whom God made like himself. Praises and curses come from the same mouth! My brothers and sisters, this should not happen.”  (James 3:2,7-10 NCV)

Solomon was considered the wisest king who ever lived and he wrote some incredible proverbs that challenge us to live wisely.  He speaks clearly about the power of our words. Check this out…

8 The wise do what they are told,

       but a talkative fool will be ruined.

10 A wink may get you into trouble,

       and foolish talk will lead to your ruin.

 11 The words of a good person give life, like a fountain of water,

       but the words of the wicked contain nothing but violence.

 My words matter in every area of my life.  I’m a husband, Dad, son, brother, friend, worship pastor, Realtor, manager and neighbor.  I have responsibilities to use my words wisely in any and every situation.

I believe that as I spend time in the Word of God, the Spirit of God helps me with my words and how I use them in my daily life.  My words have life or death – I must choose them carefully so that they are life-giving words!
