A Call From The Lord

Woman talking through a megaphone and a man plugging his earsI’ve never heard the audible voice of God. I have heard Him speak. I have felt His call upon my life many times. I also believe He responds with wisdom and direction. He communicates with me through His Spirit into my heart. I can’t really explain it much more specific than that. I do believe I was called into ministry many years ago. I believe that God calls all of His kids to love and serve in some capacity with their lives. I also believe that I was led into the field of Real Estate where I could become a trusted advisor and friend and could live out my values while earning a living. I believe that my wife and I were called to adopt a young kid from Nicaragua and provide for him opportunity upon opportunity. I’ve noticed over the years that if I feel called to do something then I have much more staying power when times get hard. I have learned to lean into the call when I’m struggling to stay on track and live in obedience to the call.

Jonah is a classic story of someone ignoring and running from the call of God. The Lord reveals His power, His discipline and He makes a way where there seems to be no way out. Check this out…

1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 ‘Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.’

3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship….

15 Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16 At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him.

17 Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. (Jonah 1:1-5; 15-17 NIV)

I want to answer the call of God upon my life. When He says, “jump” I want to say “How high?” He leads me in the big events and the little events. He speaks into my heart about going and doing on His behalf. I must tune my spiritual ears to hear Him speak. The Lord can do anything He wants, but sometimes He wants me to act on His behalf. I would be wise to listen and act accordingly when I hear the call of God upon my life.

Pressing On!
