Treasured Events
As a Dad there are many treasured events that are stored up inside my heart. There are things about my children that I hope never fade from my memory. I remember things about their first steps, first Christmas, first haircut, first tooth. I also remember conversations that revealed their heart and how the Lord was shaping their heart and their character to be like His. The longer I live, the more treasured events get stored in my memory. I treasure those memories more and more as the years roll by.
I can hardly imagine Mary & Joseph’s thoughts regarding all that was happening to them. Mary finds out she’s pregnant with the Son of God and yet she had not had any sexual relations with a man. She ends up having to travel to Bethlehem in her third trimester and has the baby among strangers I suppose. I think she was there because of Joseph’s family heritage and the taxation registration process. After the baby is born some regular shepherds show up to see her baby. They tell this cool story about angels appearing to them. Check this out…
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. (Luke 2:16-19; 33; 51-52 NIV)These events probably continued for Mary & Joseph. I imagine that they saw lots of events in the course of Jesus’ life to treasure and ponder.
I started thinking about my normal ordinary day today – what events will happen today that may become treasured events or treasured conversations. Sometime these happen via text message or email or a simple teachable moment at the dinner table. I don’t want to miss the treasured events that the Lord allows me to experience with my family and friends. I want to store these up much like a computer stores all my files. These are treasures that money or the lack of money can touch!
