A New Heart

human heartI remember years ago when the first artificial heart transplant took place – I think it was in the early 1980’s and a man named Barney Clark was the recipient of the “Jarvik 7”, named after it’s inventor. Mr. Clark was at death’s door with his natural heart and became a good candidate for the artificial heart. Mr. Clark was pretty much out of options and agreed to the artificial heart transplant in order to advance scientific research. He lived 112 days after the surgery.

My heart is one of the single most important components to my body. My heart pumps blood to all parts of our body and works closely with my brain to allow me to live and function properly.  The heart is also called the “center of my emotions”.  I know that the Lord refers to the heart symbolically as the place where decisions are made about how to live. Check this out….

30 “So I will judge you, people of Israel; I will judge each of you by what you do, says the Lord God. Change your hearts and stop all your sinning so sin will not bring your ruin. 31 Get rid of all the sins you have done, and get for yourselves a new heart and a new way of thinking. Why do you want to die, people of Israel? 32 I do not want anyone to die, says the Lord God, so change your hearts and lives so you may live. (Ezekiel 18:30-32 NCV)

The Lord knows my heart. He knows my thoughts. My actions flow from my heart and my thoughts. I can do things that make others think good of me, but if my motives are bad, the Lord knows that. He sees what others can’t see. He knows all my secret thoughts, my secret sin – He KNOWS me like no one else can or does. It blows my mind that He uses people like me to serve in His kingdom. He used an adulterer in David, a liar in Abraham, a loud mouth like Peter – the list could go on and on. The game changer in each of these people was their heart. The Lord knew that their heart was good and that their behavior would follow.  I need to constantly renew my heart to be like His, so that my behavior will reflect Him completely.

Pressing On!
Dwayne
