Undivided
Marriage is quite a mystery in some ways and at the end of the day it is about commitment to ones spouse. Marriage is under assault in our culture as being outdated and old-fashioned. I would contend that there is no other relationship that we can be in that takes its place. A healthy marriage takes work, time and strong commitment. It is incredibly fulfilling when it’s working properly. Paul talked about marriage in 1 Corinthians 7. He speaks about being single is better as he is, but how it’s better to marry if you really want that. Check this out….
32 I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. 33 But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife— 34 and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. 35 I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord. (1 Corinthians 7:3235 NIV)If a marriage is divided in faith, it becomes more of a challenge. I thought Paul was speaking to the value of being single in the context that you have less responsibility and can devote your time and your attention to the Lord’s work. I believe that if both husband and wife are wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord and His Work that they can be even stronger than one person alone. I get what He’s saying and I don’t disagree. I’m just writing from a different perspective. Paul is writing from a single man’s perspective and I’m writing from a married mans perspective. My wife and I want to honor the Lord in all we do. We help each other in our walk with the Lord. We hold each other accountable. Together we are stronger than if we were living separate lives. It does take a bit of work to keep our attention on the Lord’s work and not get distracted from our own selfish wants and desires. It takes work, but it’s worth the effort – the fulfillment of this relationship is really hard to explain in words!
A strong undivided marriage = a strong home.
A strong undivided home = a better community and better world.
