Heir

Happy surprised manThis word is defined as someone who is legally entitled to the property of another on that person’s death. Usually when the parents both die, the children become the heirs to their property. The word, heir, is also defined as “a person who carries on a legacy of a predecessor”. I realize that I became an heir to my parents, just by being born. They have more kids, so all the kids become heirs of their estate upon their passing.  Being an heir is not really earned; it’s about being born into the family. Paul speaks to the church in Galatia about our inheritance as believers. Check this out…

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:26-29 NIV)

I love the fact that I’m an heir to the promise, just like the Apostle Paul or anyone else who believes in Jesus. I want to remain clothed in Him and honor Him with my behavior. Part of my commitment to Him includes the honor of carrying on His legacy of love, grace and forgiveness. He was so quick to forgive me – always. I need to be quick to forgive as well as practice deep love for others – just like Jesus. I’m thankful to be an heir to eternal life with Him. I don’t want to wear that title flippantly at all.

Hope

hope ave and change wayThis is a word that has incredibly deep meaning. I’ve been in a place of incredible hope and I know the opposite of hope, which is despair. Hope is anticipation, expectation & desire for something to happen. Hope often keeps me motivated and moving forward in the journey.  If I lost all hope, it would make it tough to keep being positive and moving forward. Paul writes to the church in Rome about this very subject. Check this out…

5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, 6 so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:5-6; 13 NIV)

Hope changes perspective. Hope brings life with it. Hope pushes out despair and all sorts of fear and doubt. Hope gives me positive perspective and direction. My Hope rests in Christ as I face the every day and/or the mundane tasks of life. I have hope that this life is not all there it. I believe in eternal life with God in heaven. I have hope because I know Jesus, my hope is built on faith in Him.

Access Code

LKR032459I had a loud wake up call this morning as I’m stumbling into the kitchen my normal sleepy stupor.  One of my boys had set the security system and accidentally (I hope!) set the motion sensor. That ear-piercing alarm scared the crap out of me and freaked me out a good bit. At times like that, I’m so out of it, I can barely remember the code to shut the darn thing off. Then I try to find my phone to report the false alarm. I can’t remember the code to open my phone (which is not the same code to shut off the alarm!) and all of this before my first cup of coffee. My hands were shaking not because of fear, but my heart was racing because I couldn’t get my mind awake. You’d think after that 150db alarm, I’d be awake! The alarm company calls me first and I tell them all is well – even though my heart is racing after that madness! After getting my coffee started, I opened the Word to Romans 5 and Paul talks about our access to God. This passage blessed my heart and directed my thoughts to gratitude for such grace. Check this out….

1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:1-8 NIV)

I have to say that this never gets old to me! I love being showered with the amazing Grace of God.  I can have peace with God every minute, every hour of every day through Jesus. He became the sacrifice/payment for my sin. I have the ticket to Eternal Life with God through Jesus. I also have the secret code to the abundant life before eternal life!  Through the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, I can walk in faith through my everyday normal life as a Husband, Dad and Friend/Realtor. The components of this life are no longer a mystery because I have the access code. The bad things that happen build me and the good things that happen bless me. I am wide awake – eyes wide open – basking in the glow of grace this morning! BTW, I think my heart rate is getting back to normal too!

Not Ashamed

Man praying with the BibleThere have been many embarrassing moments in my life. I don’t hide my embarrassment very well either. When I get embarrassed, my face turns very red and flushed. I have never been able to control that either. I don’t set out to be embarrassed either. It’s just something that happens.  Jesus speaks clearly to His disciples as he was on the subject of how this was all going to end. He told them that some would be embarrassed and ashamed of Him.  Check this out….

34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? 37 Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.” (Mark 8:34-38 NIV)

Following Jesus is not the easiest thing in the world, but it’s the most important thing in the world.  He alone holds the keys to eternal life. He calls us to surrender our lives for His way and His will, then we will receive in exchange eternal life! I think that sometimes when I loose sight of that goal, eternal life, I get caught up in trying to be something big here on earth. I want my life here on earth to reflect my relationship with God. I am not ashamed to follow Jesus and surrender to His way and His will for my life.  I have no intentions of shoving my faith down others throat, but I don’t intend to exchange my eternity for anything here on earth. I’m not ashamed of Jesus. I’m thankful that the Lord saved me and has my eternal home ready and waiting.
