My Best Self

Follow Lead Buttons Show Leading The Way Or FollowingA couple of years ago I was introduced to Darren Hardy who produces “Darren Daily” – a short motivational video that comes to my inbox every day of the week. He speaks about a daily habit or attitude that will help build me as a business leader and as a leader of my family. I enjoy these little video blogs and they help me grow. Yesterday’s challenge was about being my best self. This clip made me think and ponder my daily choices and ask the question: “Am I bringing my best self to work each day?”

I love starting my day listening to the Lord speak into my life through His Word. I feel like my heart gets rejuvenated and amped up for the day. This morning was no exception. I read in Colossians about more of what my “best self” could look like. Check this out…

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. 14 Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 And let the peace of Christ, to which you were also called in one body, rule your hearts. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:12-17 CSB)

I want to keep growing my “best self”. I want to continue to evaluate the direction of my daily life and my business. I want to keep growing as a follower of Jesus. I want to keep growing as a husband, Dad and Pop. I want to keep growing as REALTOR and Broker. I want to live my life in such a way that people are clearly aware that I’m a follower of Jesus because of the characteristics of my life.

My best self will always have Christ at the center of my life. I want to bring compassion, competence, consistency, skill, kindness, patience, service (this list could get long!) to every person I meet or work with. I want my best self to showcase my faith in the Lord.

Work – Work – Work!

Holstein cow, 5 years old, standing against white backgroundAs a young kid, I learned the value of work. My parents taught me at a very young age the importance of work. We had a small farm with four or five cows most of the time. We went through one season when I was in high school, where I helped milk our cows by hand every day. My dad would milk two cows and I would milk tree. His two produced more milk than my three. There were mornings it was hard to wake up and get the day started working that early, but it taught me discipline. I was never a big fan of fresh milk and still today I don’t drink it much at all.

Work is defined as a mental or physical activity done to achieve a goal or result. Work is more than just something I get paid to do. There are times when I’m doing my “honey do” list at home, that it really is work. There are other times when I’m simply thinking about a process in my head and it really feels like work. King Solomon spoke about this subject too. Check this out….

9 What does the worker get for his hard work? 10 I’ve seen the heavy load God has put on men. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also given men a sense of what he’s been doing down through the ages. But they can’t completely figure out what he’s done from the beginning to the end.
12 They should be happy and do good while they live. I know there’s nothing better for them to do than that. 13 Everyone should eat and drink. People should be satisfied with all of their hard work. That is God’s gift to them.
14 I know that everything God does will last forever. Nothing can be added to it. And nothing can be taken from it. God does that so men will have respect for him. (Ecclesiastes 3:9-14 NIV)

I don’t mind hard work. In fact I like getting up early and spending time with the Lord reflecting on my day of work that lies ahead. I have people to connect with. I have decisions to be made. I have meetings that are waiting on me. I really like what I do as a REALTOR/Friend to many. I enjoy coming alongside people as they navigate the purchase or sale of real property – usually one of the largest investment they have. I want to protect my clients and customers from “gotchas” in the process and help them have a good experience. I want all of my work to honor the Lord as I serve others.
