Powerful Powerless Posture

I’ve been told to stand up straight and stop slumping. I’ve also been told to sit up straight. As I get older, I wish I had listened to that advice because good posture requires a conscious choice and then it can become a habit. I’ve noticed when I sit at my desk, that I scoot down in the chair, otherwise known as slouching.  Orthopedic doctors have a made a good living helping people who have poor posture. Good posture can help assist good health and good physical growth. (I’m not a doctor, but I think that this has a common-sense factor to it.)

On the Spiritual side of things, I believe posture might be even more important to my spiritual health. Prayer Posture is spoken of throughout scripture. I came across a simple verse in Psalms this morning that reminded me of this. Check this out…

Exalt the Lord our God!
Bow low before his feet, for he is holy! (Psalm 99:5 NLT)

There is something different about me when I bow down in prayer.

There is something humbling about kneeling in prayer.

When I kneel before the Lord or lay out face down before Him, I am completely vulnerable and humble. This directly affects the content and the context of my prayers. My heart is more easily humbled when my physical posture reflects humility.

Powerful Powerless Posture makes a statement before I begin my prayer. My posture states Who is the Powerful One and who is the broken one. The Lord is completely in charge and I’m not.  Without Him, I am nothing. I believe that while this “powerful powerless posture” appears weak to others who might notice, there is in fact great inner spiritual strength that comes to me when my spiritual posture and physical poster are humbled before Him. I will bow down before Him all day long – my whole life long.

Pressing On!
