My Lips Are Moving

Question: How can you tell if that guy is telling a lie?

Answer: His lips are moving.

There are people who are prone to lie. When my kids were growing up, I could navigate most any “lapse in judgement” they had, but I hate lies.  A lie would receive some sort of punishment. I believe lying is a severe breach of trust. I would suggest that a person who is a habitual liar has very shallow relationships. I’ve had people lie to me to “protect me”, but I would rather deal with the sting of the truth than to deal with the aftermath of a lie. The truth usually finds its way out of a “cover-up” or a lie.

David prayed a prayer asking God to protect his lips. I’m praying that over my lips too! Check this out…..

O Lord, I am calling to you. Please hurry!
Listen when I cry to you for help!
Accept my prayer as incense offered to you,
and my upraised hands as an evening offering.

Take control of what I say, O Lord,
    and guard my lips.
Don’t let me drift toward evil
or take part in acts of wickedness.(Psalm 141:1-4 NLT)

The words that come across my lips reveal my heart.

The words that come across my lips reveal my character.

The words that come across my lips can build up or destroy.

I need the Lord’s help in controlling my tongue. Sometimes I hear myself say something that I should not have said. It was bad enough for the thought to race through my head, but when I speak it, there are more consequences. James speaks about controlling the tongue in his epistle. Check this out….

Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.(James 3:1-6 NLT)

I’ve hurt people over the years with words that I speak.

I’ve helped people with the words I speak.

I’m working at guarding the words I speak with the Lord’s help. I want my words to be encouraging, inspiring and motivational. I don’t want my words to tear down, I want my words to build up others. I need the Lord’s help to make my words a blessing to others.

Pressing On!

Dwayne
