Great Grandpa
I have been Pop (aka Grandpa) for nearly a year and I really do like this new title and new role. It’s a blessing to see my children becoming parents. It’s weird in a way, but very normal at the same time. Getting to be around the little ones who are connected to me through my kids is really fun. My wife enjoys “baby shopping” again. I don’t always think about my parents and how they met. I also don’t think much about how my grand parents or great grand parents met. Without all of that coming together, I wouldn’t be here nor would I understand the joy of being a Dad or even Pop.
Our lives are the result of a lot of connections working together to bring us into this world. I think it would be cool to go back in time and visit with my grand parents again and great grand parents. It would be cool to see how my life was shaped by their values and lives.
Boaz was a good man who really liked Ruth and he knew of her love for her mother in law. When he learned that he was second in line to the kinsmen redeemer, he went to work to clear this matter quickly. To redeem Naomi and her land meant Ruth came with the package and the kinsman redeemer didn’t want to take that deal. Boaz steps up to the plate and marries Ruth. Check this out…
13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.
14 The women said to Naomi: ‘Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.’
16 Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. 17 The women living there said, ‘Naomi has a son!’ And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. (Ruth 4:13-17 NIV)
Boaz and Ruth became “Pop & Nanna” to King David. It is so cool to see the hand of God is building His Kingdom through even a foreign girl who had her head on straight. She loved her mother-in-law deeply and commitment meant something to her. God honored her life with the marriage to Boaz but also with a son who grew up to become Dad to the greatest King who lived – David. So Boaz and Ruth were grandparents to the shepherd boy David who grew to become King of Israel.
I need to be aware that God just might be doing stuff like that with my family. He is orchestrating His Will and His Way through their lives. I can’t see into the future, but my past has shaped my today and my today will certainly shape my tomorrow. I totally trust the Lord to live in me and work through me to continue His Story through my family. I am a blessed Dad and thankful beyond words for my children that the Lord has blessed me with. I’m praying for my children, their children and their children’s children that they honor God with their lives.
Pressing On!
