He Made The Way

Christmas Nativity SceneI love celebrating Jesus’ birthday – Christmas! The story of His birth is beautiful and I’ve heard this story all my life. I don’t get tired of hearing it because the story of Christmas is about God making the way for me to get to Him. He came to earth as a vulnerable little baby to fulfill the plan of The Father.

As I read through the Old Testament, they are predicting and preparing for the Messiah (aka Jesus) to come. The Psalmist David writes about his relationship with God and he gives such great perspective of our God and just how He loves, provides and protects us. Check this out…

1 I love you, Lord, my strength.

2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;

    my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,

    my shield (sovereign) and the horn (strength) of my salvation, my stronghold.

3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,

    and I have been saved from my enemies.

16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;

    he drew me out of deep waters.

17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,

    from my foes, who were too strong for me.

18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,

    but the Lord was my support.

19 He brought me out into a spacious place;

    he rescued me because he delighted in me. (Psalm 18:1-3; 16-19 NIV)

I feel loved, protected, rescued and connected to my God through His Son. I can’t imagine doing life without Him. I want to grow in my knowledge and understanding of Him. He made the way for me to have a close relationship with Him. He is always making a way – that Who He is. He is so creative and consistent. This thought reminded me of a song I heard many years ago called: God Will Make A Way by Don Moen.

God will make a way

Where there seems to be no way

He works in ways we cannot see

He will make a way for me

He will be my guide

Hold me closely to His side

With love and strength for each new day

He will make a way, He will make a way

By a roadway in the wilderness, He’ll lead me

And rivers in the desert will I see

Heaven and Earth will fade but His Word will still remain

And He will do something new today

Oh, God will make a way

Where there seems to be no way

He works in ways we cannot see

He will make a way for me

He will be my guide

Hold me closely to His side

With love and strength for each new day

He will make a way, He will make a way

Pressing On!

The Map!

GPS And MapI must confess that I haven’t used a map in quite a while. (I finally figured out how to fold it back like it was!) The map is designed to show me where streets are located and intersect with one another as well as showing other features of an area of land. I use a different sort of “map” now. It started with a GPS for my car and a little voice telling me to turn left on this street or that one. Now I have a handy little GPS on my phone. I don’t really have need for a map, unless I want to see the “big picture” and the GPS has one of those too.  I definitely need directions quite often. If I had a map, I would figure it out, but since some really smart people have built the “maps app”, I will defer to the technology.

Paul speaks forth a great discourse on salvation through Jesus to the Jews and the non-Jews. Before Jesus, the law was the only way to connect with God.  Now the “Upgrade” comes along and Paul teaches the importance of faith in Jesus. Check this out…

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:21-26 NIV)

Jesus is the Map/GPS to connect me to God. He not only is The Map – He authored it as well. Before Jesus, the way to God was through the law and totally about behavior. Now the way to God starts by faith in Jesus. The law can’t save me, but Jesus can. I especially noticed that Paul says more than once: “apart from the law” that the righteousness of God is given through faith in Jesus.

Jesus called Himself, the Way, the Truth & the Life! He is the ONLY way that I can connect to God personally and intimately. I have my destination set to Heaven and Jesus is the GPS that gets me there!
