The Rock

stone isolated white background natural rock granite solid bouldWhen I think of the word rock, I think of something solid. A rock is hard to break. A rock makes a great foundation – we manufacture a rock like substance called concrete. The Lord refers to the Rock often as our faith foundation. There is a song that says: “On Christ, the Solid Rock I stand; all other ground is sinking sand”. I have also been known to trip over a rock. If the rock is big enough I can stand on it or go around it.

Paul makes it clear that even those that are not of Jewish decent have access to the foundation of Jesus Christ which produces in us righteousness. Check this out…

30 What should we say then? Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained righteousness—namely the righteousness that comes from faith. 31 But Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not achieved the righteousness of the law. 32 Why is that? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. 33 As it is written,

Look, I am putting a stone in Zion to stumble over
and a rock to trip over,
and the one who believes on him
will not be put to shame. (Romans 9:30-33 CSB)

I am putting my faith in Creator God. I believe He created the earth, the universe in all its expanse and intricate detail. He is the One in Whom I trust to lead me through whatever I face in this life. My journey here for what feels like a short span prepares me for eternity which is unmeasurable time.

I love David’s prayer – seeking God as a refuge. Check this out…

Be a rock of refuge for me, where I can always go. Give the command to save me, for you are my rock and fortress. (Psalm 71:3 CSB)

I stand on the Rock Eternal because He gives me strength.

I stand on the Rock Eternal because He picks me up when I stumble.

I stand on the Rock Eternal because He saved me.

I stand on the Rock Eternal because He loves me.

Protection

ProtectedI don’t often think of all the steps I take in protecting myself. I wear proper clothing to protect myself from the weather. I have protections inside my home. I have protection systems on my computer equipment.  I have also sorts of physical protection in place and I was reminded this morning of the spiritual protection I need to go along with the physical protection. Check this out…

1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;

    let me never be put to shame;

    deliver me in your righteousness.

3 Since you are my rock and my fortress,

    for the sake of your name lead and guide me.

4 Keep me free from the trap that is set for me,

    for you are my refuge.

5 Into your hands I commit my spirit;

    deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love,

    for you saw my affliction

    and knew the anguish of my soul.

23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people!

    The Lord preserves those who are true to him,

    but the proud he pays back in full.

24 Be strong and take heart,

    all you who hope in the Lord. (Psalm 31:1,3-5,7,23-24 NIV)

I feel safe in the Presence of God. When I’m threatened – I can feel safe with the Lord as my Fortress and my Rock. The Lord is with me always. He & I can face anything that comes my way. He knows my fears. He knows my doubts. He knows my heart completely and He loves me anyway. I find strength in knowing He can handle whatever comes my way.

My Rock, my Fortress, my Refuge, my Protection, my Counselor, My Deliverer – He is the Lord of all.

Up Then Down

Live on Purpose Words on Bulletin Board Fulfilling LifeI’ve heard it said, “what goes up must come down”. I think this quote was credited to Sir Isaac Newton who was an English scientist credited with writing the Law of Gravitation. Gravity is a force to be reckoned with. It’s pretty hard to deny something that is this strong all around me every day. I actually rarely think about the law of gravity, because I’m too busy living my life to think much about it.

Obadiah spoke about the fall of Edom, one of the enemies of the people of Israel. Edom was a descendent of Esau and the people of Israel were God’s chosen people from the linage of Jacob. The Lord had punished His people for their disobedience and He was about to deliver them. Obadiah explains to them that the Lord is about to bring them down. Check this out….

4 Though you soar like the eagle

    and make your nest among the stars,

    from there I will bring you down,’

declares the Lord.

15 ‘The day of the Lord is near

    for all nations.

As you have done, it will be done to you;

    your deeds will return upon your own head.

17 But on Mount Zion will be deliverance;

    it will be holy,

    and Jacob will possess his inheritance. (Obadiah 1:4,15,17 NIV)

When I’m on top of the world, I need to remember how I got there. I also need to remember that life is full of ebb and flow. I won’t always be up and I won’t always be down. I also need to remember that in order to climb to the top that I don’t “step on” others to get there. I’ve seen people do this and live to regret it because their success comes at the expense of others. I really want to give the Lord credit for any success I have. I want to lean into Him and hold on tight when I fail. In every situation, every high and every low – He is still my Rock and my Redeemer. He never fails. He never makes a mistake. He is calm and consistent. I want to honor Him with my life activities and my thoughts. This is easier to say than do. I need His help to honor Him and keep my thoughts pure. He never lets go of me and I’m so very thankful.

Preparation

Man praying with the BibleI think it’s important to do the preparation ahead of time so that when things come my way, I’ll know how I want this to play out. I make preparation for things I know that are coming. I make preparation for things that I have no idea are coming my way. The thing is, things that come my way NEVER surprise the Lord. With Him in my heart, I can be prepared for anything that comes my way. I may never have walked through the path of a certain surprise, but He walks through it with me and He equips me to be strong and walk through it. Check this out….

1 Praise be to the Lord my Rock,

    who trains my hands for war,

    my fingers for battle.
2 He is my loving God and my fortress,

    my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield,
 in whom I take refuge,

    who subdues peoples under me.
3 Lord, what are human beings that you care for them,

    mere mortals that you think of them?
4 They are like a breath;

    their days are like a fleeting shadow. (Psalm 144:1-4 NIV)

In preparation, I try to plan what will happen next. As I read through the Word of God and go on the journey with Him, He gives me wisdom and discernment for each step of the way. If I don’t have the Lord, I’m very ill-prepared for what is ahead.  He is the Rock that don’t move and He leads me through anything that comes my way. I was reminded of this new song, that I’m looking forward to singing with our church.

The Rock Won’t Move

By Vertical Church

Video Here

When the ground beneath my feet gives way

And I hear the sound of crashing waves

All my world is washing out to sea.

I’m hidden safe in the God who never moves

Holding fast to the promise of Your truth

You are holding tighter still to me.

Chorus:

Oh, the Rock won’t move and His word is strong

The Rock won’t move and His love can’t be undone

The Rock of our salvation

My hope is in the promise of Your blood

My support within the raging flood

Even in the tempest, I can see

I’m hidden safe in the God who never moves

Holding fast to the promise of Your truth

You are holding tighter still to me.

Chorus:

The Rock won’t move and His word is strong

The Rock won’t move and His love can’t be undone

The Rock of our salvation

Bridge:

On Christ the solid rock I stand

All other ground is sinking sand

The Rock won’t move

And when darkness seems to hide His face

I rest on His unchanging grace.

The Rock won’t move

No, the Rock won’t move

The Rock won’t move and His word is strong

The Rock won’t move and His love can’t be undone

The Rock of our salvation

 In my preparation I want to be found holding on to the Rock through anything and everything I face!
