Power To Destroy

For God so loved the world... God holding world with crossAs I read the Old Testament I’m amazed at how God created the world, but also how engaged and involved in creation He was. He had His people that He lead, He protected, He provided and He punished. The Lord built the earth and is still in charge of it. Isaiah reminded me of this fact this morning. Check this out….

4 All the stars in the sky will be dissolved
    and the heavens rolled up like a scroll;
all the starry host will fall
    like withered leaves from the vine,
    like shriveled figs from the fig-tree.
8 For the Lord has a day of vengeance,
    a year of retribution, to uphold Zion’s cause (Isaiah 34:4,8 NIV)

I don’t always understand the ways of the Lord – but I trust Him. I believe He holds the power to deliver or destroy anyone or anything. He is All-Powerful. The thing I love about the Lord though is that He has all power, yet He chooses to love. He restrains His Power against even me. He loves me deeply and hates my sin deeply. He offers Grace & Mercy in lieu of punishment. As I read the Old Testament in light of the New Testament, I see the hand of God moving in the lives of all people. Through His One and Only Son, He made a way for me to part of His family. I now have His Provision and His Protection and access to His Power to lead me and save me. I’m grateful for His Power and Presence.

Large & In Charge

For God so loved the world... God holding world with crossHow could I possibly put limits on God? How could I possibly begin to describe Him in size and scope?  He created all that I see and know. He sustains all of creation. He is present everywhere. He knows everything. He really is beyond describing. As I read through the Psalms, the writer actually does a good job in his attempts at describing some of the facets of God. Check this out….

4 You are radiant with light,
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
7 It is you alone who are to be feared.

    Who can stand before you when you are angry?
11 Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;

    let all the neighboring lands

    bring gifts to the One to be feared.
12 He breaks the spirit of rulers;

    he is feared by the kings of the earth. (Psalm 76:4,7,11-12 NIV)

When I look at the works of God’s hand, I’m amazed at His Power and His Creativity. I’m also humbled that He cares about me. I am stunned that He wants to know what is going on in my heart. I can’t quite get my head around the Power and Presence of God. I don’t intend to stop trying to understand the scope of His Presence and Power. I want to know Him more. I want Him to reveal more of Himself to me. I feel small and insignificant, but He is the opposite of that. He is Large and In Charge!

IMG_0090When I think of this word, I often think of how we title the royalty of kings and queens. We would say “your majesty” when calling on them or speaking to them. The definition speaks of “beauty, dignity or impressive stateliness”. Majesty to me also screams out a characteristic of God. He is the ultimate Majestic being. He is the Creator of all that I can see and all that I know. There is anything created that He didn’t have a hand it. He rules and reigns over the universe! He personifies the term Majestic. Check this out….

Lord, our Lord,

    how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory

    in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
   you have established a stronghold against your enemies,

    to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,

    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,

    which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,

    human beings that you care for them? (Psalm 8:1-4 NIV)

The Power and Presence of God is most definitely part of how I would describe Him. His Name is Power and Majesty. He is to be honored and praised above anything and everything because He alone is the source of everything I know.  Much of the good He made has been turned into something bad. The Lord created all good things and made them to bless us. When we use the things He made for good in a bad way, it does not change Who He is. My perspective of God changes when I disobey Him. He goes from being the Majestic King to a task master and disciplinarian.

I’m reminded of a song by one of my favorite British band “Delirious?” called “Majesty

If I can grasp the majesty of God – my perspective is lined up. My behavior then should honor my Creator. I’m humbled that He is Who He is and He wants to know me more. I can’t help but bow down in His Presence.

Strength Level Measured on Thermometer Ultimate StrongThere are events and experiences that really rock my world – sometimes to the point of really shaking my faith.  There are things that happen that are hard to understand and process. I still believe the Lord helps me to overcome them all. His Presence directs my path as I meander through uncharted territory of struggle and pain. I sometimes feel like the struggle is going to take me out. But then…. But then, I remember His Promises, His Power and His Presence! It makes all the difference in the world. Check this out….

29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.”
31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:29-33 NIV)

I can overcome any obstacle that I face when I have the Presence and Power of God in my life. I know for sure that it will not be a “cakewalk”, but I can overcome with Him. He positions me to not only survive tremendous difficulties, He actually helps me thrive and grow in the middle of trouble. His economy revolves around my trust in Him. His economy involves lots of mercy and grace for stupid choices and ignorant decisions. I am thankful for His Promise, His Presence, His Power and His Peace! It makes all the difference in my worldview!

Power – Punishment – Presence

I remember as a kid thinking of how sweet my grandmother was. Mammie was this sweet lady who always had a smile for me and always had a way of making things right. I can’t remember the incident when I saw her get angry, but I remember thinking: “I don’t want to get her mad at me!” She believed in the “board of education applied to the seat of understanding”! She was gentle, sweet and kind but also strong and firm.

The Lord is powerful beyond words and there are times when His power is needed to punish. There are also times when His power is needed with simply His Presence. Check this out….

"Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path"
“Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”

2 Hear this, all you nations;

    listen, earth and all you who live on it.

The Lord God will be a witness against you,

    the Lord from his Holy Temple.
3 See, the Lord is coming out of his place;

    he is coming down to walk on the tops of the mountains.
4 The mountains will melt under him,

    and the valleys will crack open,
like wax near a fire,

    like water running down a hillside.
5 All this is because of Jacob’s sin,

    because of the sins of the nation of Israel.
(Micah 1:2-5b NCV)

I don’t necessarily want to see the power of the Lord through punishment. I love knowing the power of the Lord through His Presence. His Presence brings me peace and comfort. His Presence brings clarity. His Presence brings wisdom and discernment. His Presence brings healing and hope. I want to remain in the Presence of God today and every day.
