Light Leads To Life

Hand drawing light bulbI am not generally afraid of the dark. I will say that I’m not a fan of the dark. When I say dark, I don’t usually think of “pitch black darkness”. There are usually lights on the refrigerator, microwave, modem, etc.… that add a little light to the room. A week or so ago, the power went off in the middle of the night and that is dark – no light from appliances or the security light in the back yard. I’m thankful that iPhone has a flashlight feature! True darkness is the absence of any light. I’ve not experienced that a bunch in my life for sure.

I came across a passage that Jesus spoke to the people and He clearly says He is the LIGHT of the world. Check this out…

12 Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” (John 8:12 NLT)

Light is a unique force. I decided to look up “characteristics of light” and it speaks of how critical light can be to the photographer. I don’t know a lot of details about that. Some characteristics about light that I thought about:

Light is silent

Light gets attention

Light chases darkness out

Light gives direction

Light reveals

Jesus calls His followers the Light of the World too. He wants us to illuminate the world we live in with truth, honor, goodness, and importantly, LOVE. I feel like His Word has illuminated my way and I’m responsible for illuminating the way for others. I want to follow The LIGHT OF THE WORLD – Jesus and let Him shine inside of me. I want Him to show me the way. I want to follow Him and show others the way.

Heart Versus Flesh

Behind the maskSome people believe the end is near. I remember in 1988 there was some guy who believed that the world was coming to an end. He had made some calculations based on data he has acquired. He was wrong. Here we are nearly 30 years later. No one knows when this world will end. I believe we should be alert and ready at a moment’s notice. I could be taken in an accident while driving. I’m not trying to be morbid, but I am trying to alert and ready no matter what happens to me – I want to be ready when my time on earth ends.

My heart and flesh are the practical battle that fights inside of me. It’s the same spiritual battle that features God’s Spirit versus the enemy. Paul gives some practical counsel about preparing for this internal battle. Check this out..

11 Besides this, since you know the time, it is already the hour for you to wake up from sleep, because now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.12 The night is nearly over, and the day is near; so let us discard the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk with decency, as in the daytime: not in carousing and drunkenness; not in sexual impurity and promiscuity; not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and don’t make plans to gratify the desires of the flesh. (Romans 13:11-14 CSB)

I want to cloth myself with the armor of light. This armor can cover me completely. Light exposes and reveals the darkness and chases it from the room.  When I sin, I like it to be quietly covered so that I’m not called out. I can’t hide my sin from the Lord. I am accountable to the Lord for everything I do, everything I say and everything I think. My wife holds me accountable for the first two, but God’s Spirit can assist with my thoughts.

I want to glorify the Lord NOT gratify the desires of my flesh.

I want be transparent before the Lord as well as others, NOT secretive and suspicious.

I want to live and work from a heart that is fully committed to the work of God.

Lights On

Vehicle Driving in Heavy RainWhen it rains and I’m driving, I’m supposed to keep my lights on. This is really more for others to see me than for me to see where I’m going. When it rains the visibility changes and light help illuminate all the cars that are on the road that I have to contend with.

Light is one of the most amazing creations. The Lord created the sun to light the day and the moon to light the night. A guy named Thomas Edison invented the first light bulb. Now lights come in many different forms…incandescent, fluorescent and recently more popular LED lighting.

The Lord gave Moses and the Israelites instructions regarding keeping the lights on at the Tabernacle. He wanted continually light near the most Holy Place as well as the courtyard and entrance. Check this out…

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘Command the Israelites to bring you clear oil of pressed olives for the light so that the lamps may be kept burning continually. 3 Outside the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps before the Lord from evening till morning, continually. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. 4 The lamps on the pure gold lampstand before the Lord must be tended continually. (Leviticus 24:1-4 NIV)

Light is silent – it just shines. (The fixtures that deliver light can sometimes noisy, but the light itself is silent.) Light pushes out and exposes darkness. While the darkness hides things, light illuminates for all to see. When my children were small we had nightlights all around the house. There are now lights on routers, refrigerators and other electronics that burn continuously and serve a double purpose as a night-light.

I believe that the Lord loves light. I believe that light is positive and hopeful while darkness is somewhat negative and can be devastating. I like the early morning light as the day wakes up. The daylight reveals what was unseen in the dark of night. I also believe that things done in darkness will be revealed in the light. Lightening is critical to a photographer as the item being photographed looks totally different when illuminated differently.

I wonder what my heart reveals when it is illuminated. I need to use the Word of God from several different angles to investigate my heart. I need to keep the Word as light as “lamp for my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105 NIV). I need to cultivate the continuous presence of the Light of The World in my life.
