PrinceI don’t always understand royalty. I could probably get used to it, if I were made a king. In most cultures and countries, the king comes from a whole lineage of kings or royalty. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around what it might be like to be a king. I think in some ways it would be cool, but it other ways it would be annoying. I could never simply go to my favorite restaurant without an entourage. I think I would love the “high-end” living that came with it, but not the inconvenience of fame and fortune.

I was reading this morning about Jesus’ arrest and “mock trial” before the Jews. He is then taken to Pilate. Pilate asked Jesus if He’s a king. Check this out…

36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”

37 Pilate said, “So you are a king?”

Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” (John 18:36-37 NLT)

Jesus is definitely a King. He is a different type of King. He doesn’t want the castle, the royalty, the wealth, the fame that comes from being a King. He is of the royal lineage of King David. The fact that He’s the Son of God, trumps any other characteristic of any type of king. He walked the streets teaching about God’s love and mercy. He had no house to call His castle. He didn’t wear fancy clothing. It is really obvious that He was different than what we know kings to be.

Jesus calmly explains to Pilate, the Roman governor, that His Kingdom is not in competition with the Roman government or any other government. He came to bring salvation to the world. He came to introduce access to Creator God. He came to introduce the Truth about God and His Kingdom. God’s Kingdom had been so distorted from what it looked like years before. We humans tend to amend things and “tweak” things to the way we like and it often changes something that is pivotal to the Word of God.

Jesus is King of my heart.

Jesus taught humility.

Jesus taught serving.

Jesus taught giving.

Jesus taught forgiving.

Jesus taught truth.

Jesus became King of my heart because of Who He is and the message that He brought to the world. He is the One & Only Son of God. He willingly went to the cross and became the Ultimate sacrifice for sin. He became King differently than any other king. He is the King who I’ve committed to following all the rest of my days. I want to live, serve, give and forgive like the King of all Kings.

King Of My Heart

Royal Gold CrownI grew up in the USA where we elected our President, Senate & Representatives. We did not have a system where the king is in charge and if you didn’t like his policies – oh well. If we didn’t like the way a president led our country, we would vote him out at the next election. I’m fascinated by the monarch system, but I’m glad we don’t have it here in the USA.

As I read scripture, I am under a monarch system. The Lord God is King over all the earth. He created all we see and know. Everything on earth can be traced back to Him. He is the only One who make something out of nothing. He

12 But God is my King from long ago;
    he brings salvation on the earth.

15 It was you who opened up springs and streams;
    you dried up the ever-flowing rivers.
16 The day is yours, and yours also the night;
    you established the sun and moon.
17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
    you made both summer and winter. (Psalm 74:12, 15-17 NIV)

God is the Supreme King over all the earth and He wants to be King of My Heart. He wants to take possession of my heart to make it compassionate, kind, full of love and grace – just like His heart.  He wants me to surrender my heart to His heart every day and in every situation I face. This made me think of one of current favorite songs by John Mark McMillan & Sarah McMillan called King of My Heart.

Let the king of my heart

Be the mountain where I run

The fountain I drink from

He is my song

Let the king of my heart

Be the shadow where I hide

The ransom for my life

He is my song

Let the king of my heart

Be the wind inside my sails

The anchor in the waves

He is my song

Let the king of my heart

Be the fire inside my veins

The echo of my days

He is my song

You’re never gonna let me down.

God Can Do Anything

Anything Road SignThere is one thing that God cannot do – and that is fail. He cannot fail. He does not make mistakes. He does not create something that wasn’t intended. I do think that I take things He created for good and use them for bad. God can do anything He wants at any time He wants. He can work through people who don’t even know Him. He can do good through people who are normally bad. He is the Creator of all I see and know. I remember as a kid working with clay and shaping a bowl of some sort – it was pretty crude. The bowl didn’t talk back to me. The created should show respect and honor for our Creator. Check this out….

4 For the sake of Jacob my servant,
    of Israel my chosen,
I summon you by name
    and bestow on you a title of honor,
    though you do not acknowledge me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
    apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you,
    though you have not acknowledged me,
6 so that from the rising of the sun
    to the place of its setting
people may know there is none besides me.
    I am the Lord, and there is no other.
7 I form the light and create darkness,
    I bring prosperity and create disaster;
    I, the Lord, do all these things. (Isaiah 45:4-7 NIV)

I want to live the rest of my days noticing what God is doing. I also want to be an integral part of what He is doing. I would rather have the simplest of jobs to feed and clothe my family and know without a doubt that I’m in the center of God’s plan for me. I want to honor my Creator by seeking Him and serving Him all the days of my life. I want to see where He’s working and get to work serving and helping. He can do anything He wants with me. I want to be a part of something much bigger than me. I want to be a Kingdom builder with the King of Kings, the Creator God.

Royal Gold CrownI remember as a kid studying the kings and the way they ruled. I studied the royalty that went with the position. Their life as a king was not that easy in some ways. The kings were in constant fear of their life. They weren’t sure who they could trust and who had their best interest at heart. The King was the male ruler of an independent state or country.

In the book of  Zechariah, the prophet foretells the coming of a different King and Kingdom. Check this out….

9 Rejoice greatly, people of Jerusalem!

    Shout for joy, people of Jerusalem!
Your king is coming to you.

    He does what is right, and he saves.

    He is gentle and riding on a donkey,

    on the colt of a donkey.
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim

    and the horses from Jerusalem.

    The bows used in war will be broken.
The king will talk to the nations about peace.

    His kingdom will go from sea to sea,

    and from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth. (Zechariah 9:9-10 NCV)

This is how Jesus came into Jerusalem for the last time often referred to as “The Triumphal Entry”.  Jesus is a different sort of King and the people didn’t know quite what to do with a King who didn’t rule with force and legislation. Jesus came to establish a Kingdom that from the ground up is very, very different. In His Kingdom, the servant is the highest position. His Kingdom is about peace. His Kingdom is a Kingdom of Grace and Mercy.

A Crown Of ThornsThis passage also reminded me that this world is not my eternal home. The King is coming back again some day. If He doesn’t come during my lifetime, I will still spend eternity with Him. His Kingdom here pours out the Abundant Life in preparation for Eternal Life.  When King Jesus came to earth, He brought LIFE! He brought HOPE! He brought PEACE! He did it NOT by ruling, but by serving. He did it by LOVE and not by LAW!

I’m grateful to serve a King like that! I serve other at the request of my King! I’m glad He came once and I’m glad He’s coming again! Until then – I will serve Him by serving others!
