True or False

There are times when a true or false question is easy. Then there are times when the question is worded such that I can’t be sure. The same is true with teachers of God. There are times that I hear preachers and teachers speak very clearly and distinctly something that I’m not sure is true to the Word of God.

Jeremiah met such a guy. Jeremiah’s message from the Lord has been pretty clear and negative about the future of the country of Judah & Israel. Jeremiah was speaking what the Lord told him to say. Along comes this other guy who is a “prophet of the Lord” but has a bit more positive outlook and basically tells the people what they really want to hear. Jeremiah has a word for him.  Check this out….

5Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in front of the priests and all the people who were standing in the Temple of the Lord. 6He said, “Amen! Let the Lord really do that! May the Lord make the message you prophesy come true. May he bring back here everything from the Lord’s Temple and all the people who were taken as captives to Babylon.
7“But listen to what I am going to say to you and all the people. 8There were prophets long before we became prophets, Hananiah. They prophesied that war, hunger, and terrible diseases would come to many countries and great kingdoms. 9But if a prophet prophesies that we will have peace and that message comes true, he can be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord.” (Jeremiah 28:5-9 NCV)

I think there are times when I need to test what people are saying even today about the Lord. There are people who speak of damnation and destruction without teaching about Grace. There are others that teach about Grace without speaking of sin that needs to be dealt with.  Jeremiah clearly says that if what a prophet says doesn’t come true than that guy isn’t a prophet. Pretty clear to me!

There are times when I simply need to seek the Lord to see if this preacher or that preacher can be trusted.  Discerning what is true or false is fairly simple, just not easy.  If the message being brought does not connect or complement the Word of God, then it’s false.  I’m a seeker of Truth and “I can handle the truth” especially when I walk with the Giver of Truth.  I believe that the Holy Spirit of God equips me to really discern what is true and what is false.
