True Beauty

??????????????????Redd Fox was given credit for saying, “Beauty is only skin deep, but ugly goes clear to the bone”. He was referencing an issue that we as humans have. We “judge the book by the cover”. If someone is sharply dressed and looks “well-maintained”, we make some assumptions that can sometimes be misleading. I do agree “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. I remember as a teen-aged boy, my buddies and I would talk about the cute girls. One of us would think a girl was cute and the others would totally disagree. I was reminded as I began the Song of Solomon this morning that beauty is much more than outward appearance. Check this out…

10 Your cheeks are beautiful with earrings,
your neck with strings of jewels.
11 We will make you earrings of gold,
    studded with silver
15 How beautiful you are, my darling!
    Oh, how beautiful!
Your eyes are doves. (Song of Solomon 1:10-11;15 NIV)

Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I think that outward appearance weighs in to assessing true beauty. I believe if a person is beautiful in their heart that it will show outwardly. They may be dressed or adorned in sackcloth but a beautiful spirit that comes from their heart will shine through. My Mom used to say that “beauty is as beauty does”. She was speaking to the behavior of a person. Some of the most beautiful people on earth might just be the most self-centered, egotistical and straight up evil. I don’t want to make a habit of assessing peoples worth or value based on their outward appearance. I want to use the measuring stick that the Lord uses and get to know their heart before deciding whether or not I think they are beautiful. I also want to have a heart in pursuit of God’s heart so that I will be beautiful/handsome in His eyes. He’s the One I’m trying to impress!

Pressing On!
Dwayne
