The Path

pathway in mountainsI grew up on a farm in the backwoods of Kentucky. We had cows for many years. We had a fence around our property and they were also able to run on my Pappy’s property too. They would graze on the grass. There were all these paths across the hillside. When we would call the cows in for milking or to feed them, they would use one of these paths. It was actually pretty cool, because we would use the same paths to play “Cowboys & Indians”! Each day, I’m a creature of habit. I will walk some of the same paths to feed the dog or simply go to the barn.

I also associate “path” with “plan”. The plan is to get to where I’m going in a most efficient way. The path I took yesterday will work for that. If the path I took yesterday was inefficient, then I need to try a different path/plan. My life is on a path. My faith journey has had its detours off the right path at times, but the Lord is so patient with me and leads me back.

I am starting through the Psalms and the very first one is very familiar to me. In the New Living Translation, it sounded a bit different. I really “camped out” on the last verse. Check this out….

For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction. (Psalm 1:6 NLT)

My path has been littered with pain and struggle along the way. My path has been lit up with joy and celebration as well. I have felt alone on the path, but I was NEVER alone. He is with me every step. I have listened well along the path, especially when there were choices of other paths to take. At times the path I was on ended and I had to choose a different direction. There were times there were attractive detours that seemed smart but ended up being very painful. His Grace ALWAYS finds me when I wander off. I am so thankful that the Lord watches over the path of the godly. He doesn’t always prevent my pain and struggle, but He is ALWAYS there with me through it all.

Your Grace Finds Meby Matt Redman

It’s there in the newborn cry
There in the light of every sunrise
There in the shadows of this light
Your great grace

It’s there on the mountain top
There in the everyday and the mundane
There in the sorrow and the dancing
Your great grace, oh, such grace

From the creation to the cross
There from the cross into eternity
Your grace finds me
Yes, Your grace finds me

It’s there on a wedding day
There in the weeping by the graveside
There in the very breath we breathe
Your great grace

The same for the rich and poor
The same for the saint and for the sinner
Enough for this whole wide world
Your great grace, oh, such grace

From the creation to the cross
There from the cross into eternity
Your grace finds me
Yes, Your grace finds me
There in the darkest night of the soul
There in the sweetest songs of victory
Your grace finds me
Yes, Your grace finds me
Your great grace, oh, such grace

The same for the rich and poor
The same for the saint and for the sinner
Enough for this whole wide world
Your great grace, oh, such grace

So I’m breathing in Your grace
And breathing out Your praise
