Shield, Sustainer, Deliverer

ArmorI used to love the Renaissance period where people had the body armor, shields and swords for protection. I had the opportunity to go to a Renaissance festival in Atlanta a few years back and seeing the protective gear up close was a bit different. I could see the flaws in the armor, the places where a sword could get through and possibly cause death. The shield is more of a defensive weapon and the sword much more offensive.  I think the shield is a significant part of the protective gear, especially the big shields that you could put your entire body behind. The Lord is referred to as a shield many times throughout scripture. Check this out….

Lord, how many are my foes!

    How many rise up against me!
2 Many are saying of me,

   “God will not deliver him.”
3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me,

    my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
4 I call out to the Lord,

    and he answers me from his holy mountain. (Psalm 3:1-4 NIV)

The Lord is also my Sustainer. He keeps me steady and strong in the middle of impossible odds. Check this out…

I lie down and sleep;

    I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not fear though tens of thousands

    assail me on every side. (Psalm 3:5-6 NIV)

The Lord is also my Deliverer. He has power and resources that I can’t begin to wrap my head around. He not only delivers me, but He can lift me up and give me victory when I should have been defeated.  Check this out…

7 Arise, Lord!

    Deliver me, my God!

Strike all my enemies on the jaw;

    break the teeth of the wicked.
8 From the Lord comes deliverance.

    May your blessing be on your people. (Psalm 3:7-8 NIV)

The Lord is my Shield, my Sustainer and my Deliverer. He’s got it all covered on His part – my part is putting my faith and trust in Him!

 Pressing On!
