Deserve

There are many times I’ve deserved the punishment I’ve received. Over the years I was disciplined by my parents, I deserved it. I deserved pretty much every traffic citation I go. There were other times I didn’t get what I deserved – I received Grace. Those are times I was especially grateful because I deserved something different than I got. Jeremiah was pronouncing God’s judgment on several different countries/cities.  Check this out…

12 This is what the Lord says: “Some people did not deserve to be punished, but they had to drink from the cup of suffering anyway. People of Edom, you deserve to be punished, so you will not escape punishment. You must certainly drink from the cup of suffering.” 13 The Lord says, “I swear by my own name that the city of Bozrah will become a pile of ruins! People will be shocked by what happened there. They will insult that city and speak evil of it. And all the towns around it will become ruins forever.” (Jeremiah 49:12-12 NCV)

The Lord delivered on the punishment He promised.  I got stuck on that line, “some people did not deserve to be punished, but they had to drink from the cup of suffering anyway”. I’m not sure what to do with that. I don’t think I like that taste of suffering. It often tastes bitter and harsh. I want to drink the cup of Grace and Mercy.  I guess at the end of the day, I want to drink from the cup the Lord puts before me. I probably deserve the cup of punishment and suffering because of my sin, but He often serves me the cup of Grace that I don’t deserve. I’m sure grateful to drink from the cup of Grave even though I didn’t earn it.
