Baby Christian

baby under blanketI do enjoy watching little baby humans. They are unique and different – although we were once that small, we don’t remember much about that time in our lives. My youngest grandson is right at 8 months old and he is starting to try food other than milk. When babies are small, they eat, sleep and poop – not always in that order! He is growing on milk, but he will have to begin eating solid food soon to keep growing. This is really common sense to us in the physical realm. Paul takes this same analogy into the spiritual realm. Check this out….

1Dear brothers and sisters, when I was with you I couldn’t talk to you as I would to spiritual people. I had to talk as though you belonged to this world or as though you were infants in Christ. I had to feed you with milk, not with solid food, because you weren’t ready for anything stronger. And you still aren’t ready, for you are still controlled by your sinful nature. You are jealous of one another and quarrel with each other. Doesn’t that prove you are controlled by your sinful nature? Aren’t you living like people of the world? (1 Corinthians 3:1-3 NLT)

This paragraph really jumped out at me. I do think I’m selfish and controlled by my sinful nature at times. I do think I live like people of this world at times. It’s time for me to grow up. I’ve been studying the Word of God for years and I must continue to change and grow. I can’t stay put with the faith of my family before me. I can’t live on the faith of my past. I must walk in the faith I have today. I need to nurture my faith. I need to feed my faith. I can’t just read His Word and ignore what He says there. I want to hear from the Lord each day and in each situation that I face each day. I sometimes have to be quiet and stop talking in order to hear Him speak to me. If I’m not growing, I’m slipping back to my baby ways. This reminded me of an old Amy Grant song released in 1982 called “Fat Baby”

I know a man Maybe you know him, too
You never can tell He might even be you
He knelt at the altar And that was the end
He’s saved and that’s all That matters to him
His spiritual tummy It can’t take too much
One day a week He gets his spiritual lunch
On Sunday he puts on His spiritual best
And gives his language A spiritual rest

He’s just a fat little baby He wants his bottle
And he don’t mean maybe He’s sampled solid food
Once or twice But he says doctrine Leaves him cold as ice

He’s been baptized, sanctified Redeemed by the blood
But his daily devotions Are stuck in the mud
He knows the books of the Bible And John 3:16
He’s got the biggest King James You’ve ever seen

I’ve always wondered If he’ll grow up someday
He’s momma’s boy And he likes it that way
If you happen to see him Tell him I said
He’ll never grow If he never gets fed.

I want to grow up and grow old spiritually faster than I grow older physically. What if baby humans never grow up? We would certainly consider them abnormal. Baby Christians must grow up or the Lord will call us abnormal one day.

Pressing On!
